Jose Rizal is a very important person in the Philippines. He is called the national hero because he fought for freedom from Spain without using guns. Instead, he used his brain and words. Many people say he is the face of the Philippines because his ideas helped shape the country. His greatest contribution was his writings that woke up Filipinos to fight for their rights. Rizal wrote two famous books called Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These books told stories about how the Spanish rulers treated Filipinos badly.
